The previous week took me to Berlin, the last of many trips to Germany this year. The official count for 2010 is certainly over ten, with at least half in the capital, but the latest visit was the first for work. Spending the week interviewing photographers while working with a German company was a new perspective on life in a city that usually constitutes friends and fun for me. I was also able to witness the first snowfall of the year. And it kept falling.
Off To Berlin
A month of traveling is almost at its end and a great chill has spread across northern Europe. I find myself headed to Berlin tomorrow, where the high will be around -12 C/10F on Wednesday. It's such a lovely city with snow (image from here).
Weekend Links #7
Weekend Links is a collection of the interesting bits and pieces that I’ve come across on the streets and online. The weekly post is my chance to share with you a few things that I have enjoyed, in a list compiled during the weekend. I hope you enjoy them as well.
A few things I enjoyed this week: 1. Reading this article on women wanting to look nice while riding a bicycle (via amsterdamized, above image) 2. Meeting Amy and Micha Merrick on the trip to Amsterdam and introducing them to two favorites: stroopwafels and koffie verkeerd 3. Seeing this short film from London online
Wandering Oporto
The travels of the previous week took me to Oporto, Portugal to set up a photo exhibition in Maia. The final day brought me a few rainy hours to play the flâneur, wandering through the streets of the city. This trip was just a taste and I am enticed to see more. The conversations with the locals piqued my interest to return and explore this country with great pride in the past and great worry for the future.
Weekend Links #6
After an eventful past week, I bring you Weekend Links, a collection of interesting bits and pieces. The weekly post is my chance to share with you a few things that I have enjoyed, in a list compiled during the weekend. I hope you enjoy them as well.
A few things I experienced last week: 1. Loving the music of Agnes Obel, a Danish pianist. Perfect for the fast-coming winter (pictured above, via 11.54) 2. Intrigued by this article about the divergent personalities of siblings on NPR 3. Reading a Thanksgiving reminder Back to the Land by Maira Kalman (pictured below) 4. Sifting through my photos from Oporto, Portugal and Köln, Germany. Coming soon...
Back in London
A quick trip to London this week, where I went to make a short film about a photo exhibition at the Royal Festival Hall. Two inspiring days to interview photographers and photography lovers.
I also had a few moments away from the camera equipment to peek around London, a city I haven't visited for a few years now. A walk over Waterloo Bridge with a view of the cityscape, a lazy pub lunch, and a bit of window shopping in Soho. It was a wonderful, although blustery, reunion.

Wishing for the Portland Farmer's Market in my backyard when I look at these photos (via @blueeyesbren) 6. Scouring the program of the International Documentary Film Festival of Amsterdam, which begins on Wednesday 7. Planning for a trip to Porto, Portugal this week and Cologne, Germany this weekend
Inside the Train
After my ride to the north, I was happy to see this familiar scene of the inside of a Dutch train by German photographer Julian Turner (via constant wanderlust: randomitis).
To the North
On Friday afternoon I took a train to the north of Holland, to a city called Groningen. A corner of the country that was new to me. Time to think and look out the window. And another perspective on the Dutch landscape in the height of autumn (photo from here).

November Travels
The month of November is here and I have several trips ahead of me. Friday will take me on a short trip to Groningen, in the north of the Netherlands. The following week I'm off to London. The third week to Portugal, my first time in the country! Upon my return, I will spend one night in Amsterdam before heading for a weekend - and hopefully the Weihnachstmärkte, Christmas markets - in Cologne. And the final trip at the end of the month will take me to Berlin.
Most of the travels are related to work projects, but nothing sounds better than being surrounded by photography and stories in foreign lands. I imagine I won't need to unpack or put away my suitcase for the entire month (image from johnnyvintage).
Weekend Links #3
Weekend Links is a collection of the interesting bits and pieces that I’ve come across on the streets and online. The weekly post is my chance to share with you a few things that I have enjoyed, in a list compiled during the weekend. I hope you enjoy them as well.
A few things I experienced this week: 1. Hearing the excitement grow for Little Winter on 6 and 7 November. If you're in Portland, you should go to this handmade market with over 20 artists. 2. Reading 'A Fiction Reader's Guide to Social Interaction' in The Bygone Bureau. 3. Checking in on 100 Days of Active Resistance 32 days into the project (above image by Matthew Senkowycz on Day 8). 4. Watching the trailer for Trainwriting in Berlin, a documentary the graffiti scene in the German capital (via Freunde von Freunden). 5. Partaking in a much-needed Mexican food splurge with Sarah and drinks at Café Brecht. 6. Exploring the world with Globe Genie, a creation of MIT grad student Joe McMichael. 7. Listening to CocoRosie in preparation for their concert Monday night. Click the link below to listen to a live performance in Seattle.

Whale and Ship Pumpkins
Happy Halloween! Living in a country that doesn't (really) have Halloween traditions makes me long for it even more. Caramel covered apples, candy corn, bobbing for apples, trick or treating, jack-o-lanterns, and the joy of planning the perfect costume. Nevertheless, I will cook some pumpkin soup and watch Don Knotts in The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, a family tradition, and maybe one small ghost will visit my doorstep for a treat. Eat some candy for me and enjoy these beautifully carved pumpkins from quaint living (via spaceships).
A Daily Glimpse of Autumn
My bike ride to work takes me through one of the most picturesque parks in Amsterdam, where I get a daily glimpse of autumn deepening its hold on the city. Cycling past the trees every day gives me the time to observe the diminishing numbers of leaves and their darkening shades. For my part, I'm on a serious apple cider kick. It's my favorite drink to feel cozy especially once I've come in from a ride (image from futurowoman).
Wanderlust: Vintage on Wheels
My upcoming trip to Portland in December/January becomes more exciting every day and my To Do list is growing concurrently. I'm gathering recommendations of restaurants from Lemon Basil, stores from Unruly Things and Modish, and catching up on the street style with Urban Weeds. And the excitement continues to build with Frolic and Honey Kennedy. Etc.
The list is long, but one Must Do is a visit to Wanderlust, a vintage boutique on wheels making its way around Portland (via Modish). What else is new and not to be missed in Portland?
Weekend Links #2
Weekend Links is a collection of the interesting bits and pieces that I’ve come across on the streets and online. The weekly post is my chance to share with you a few things that I have enjoyed throughout the week, in a list compiled during the weekend. I hope you enjoy them as well.
A few things I enjoyed online this week: 1. Looking at the photography from 1010, a photographic project with 10 photographs from 10 photographers taken on 10/10/10 (above image by Hilda Grahnat - what is it about cobblestone in Berlin that is so recognizable?) 2. Watching a short video about Tokyo (via The Dreamer gallery) 3. Wishing for the Juliette Hogan Winter 10 'so pretty it hurts' collection. Yes, it does. Especially with no stockists or boutiques in Europe (image below) 4. Listening to the lovely song Chaka Chaka by Las Acevedo on NPR Alt Latino 5. Watching this short video about desk spaces (via the post family) 6. Exploring Out My Window, an interactive multimedia project by Katherina Cizek (via @michabruinvels)
A Stroll down the Slatuinenweg
Slatuinenweg (translated as lettuce gardens way) is a little road around the corner from where I live. Quite literally, it was once used as a walking path to the vegetable or salad gardens. Constructed in 1697, it's quite an usual - and old - street. Instead of the five-story apartments typically found in the center of Amsterdam, the houses along the Slatuinenweg are quite small. Some are even built out of wood (houthuis), a rarity in this part of the world. Isn't it a cute street?
Akos Major Photography
Beautiful images from the Hungarian photographer Akos Major. All very wintery and serene. I will imagine this in my mind as I bundle up to face the autumn winds on my bike.
The images above and immediately below were taken in Hallstatt, Austria. The last two images are of a forest, somewhere. (via constant wanderlust)

Reading an article about mid-career sabbaticals in The New York Times 4. Watching the trailer for The King's Speech 5. Reading an article about procrastination in The New Yorker 6. Baking a coffee cake 7. Listening to the latest album from Wir Sind Helden in preparation for their Sunday night concert 8.
